About the Album

In the Shadow of the Keyboards: Italian Conversations for Strings

This recording rediscovers and revitalises two treasures of the Italian musical heritage which, after a long period of oblivion, finally return to the light, filling the apparent void left by instrumental chamber production in nineteenth-centuryItaly. The two most significant representatives of peninsular keyboard virtuosity oftheir time — a celebrated pianist and an equally renowned organist — engage with the chamber genre par excellence: the string quartet. They share a common origin in the Po Valley, that same fertile belt which since the Renaissance, together with the territories of the Kingdom of Naples, proved an inexhaustible forge of musical talent and the homeland of Bel Canto. The year of conception– 1854 – also functions as a further Leitmotiv linking the quartets presented here within a recording project conceived by the present writer together with the colleagues and friends of the Quartetto Altemps. Stefano Golinelli was born in Bologna in 1818 – where he would die in 1891. His musical talent manifested itself early, leading him to train between Bologna and Milan and soon embark upon a brilliant pianistic career. While still very young he obtained recognition from the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna, probably also thanks to the interest of Gioachino Rossini, who immediately perceived his worth and supported his rise. It was on Rossini’s recommendation, when the latter was director of the Bolognese Liceo Musicale, that in 1840 Golinelli was entrusted with the chair of piano, a post he would retain for more than thirty years, becoming a central figure in Italian pianistic pedagogy.
