Amandus Ivanschiz was a monk and a musician. He was successful as both. He died at an earlier age than his famous fellow musician, Amadeus of Salzburg.
His chamber music is on the same level as that of the greatest masters of his time. Ivanschiz was an avant-gardist. He drove the development of chamber music from its baroque roots into the future of Viennese classicism. Some of his masterpieces have been preserved at Lambach Abbey, where they appear to have been performed with enthusiasm. Did Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart hear works by Ivanschiz during his visits to the monastery?
