Between 1865 and 1868 Johannes Brahms composed his masterpiece Ein Deutsches Requiem. A large scale work for orchestra, choir and with two soloists: soprano and baritone. It has seven movements and it is Brahms’ longest work. With the death of his mother in mind, Brahms went a totally different path with the idea of a Requiem than his predecessors. First of all it is a piece of comfort, it is not a work for the dead, it is music of the living! Jan Willem conducts the The Hague Philharmonic to their highest performance. The result will have a good chance to become a reference recording in the future because every detail is spot on. The narrative and energetic style of De Vriend’s conducting gives the Requiem both depth and liveliness.
