About the Album

The title "De imitatio violistica" by organist and pianist Leo van Doeselaar is taken from the early Baroque composer Samuel Scheidt. Using this term, Scheidt tried to explain in the preface to his "Tabulatura nova" how to imitate a violin on an organ. Leo van Doeselaar was inspired by this baroque 'crossover' to compose a CD with music by Bach, Bruhns, Vivaldi and Bohm, in which the organ technique, this "synthesizer avant-la-lettre" as Van Doeselaar calls it himself, is influenced by the violin playing. The program includes an arrangement of Vivaldi's "Concerto RV.580" and the most famous organ work of all time: Bach's "Toccata and Fugue BWV.565". Leo van Doeselaar plays these works on the famous Hinsz organ in Leens. Leo van Doeselaar is a regular player of the organ in the Concertgebouw. He is also an organist at the Netherlands Bach Society. Together with Wyneke Jordans he forms a piano duo, which has released CD recordings with works by Stravinsky, Dvorak, Ravel and Schubert, among others.
