About the Album

Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos have long held a special place in the repertoire, a fact witnessed by the many concert performances and recordings of these works that have been realized over the years. Today it has become a matter of course to perform the concertos on period instruments, or so-called “original” or “historical” instruments; the evolution towards this approach has certainly had a very refreshing and positive effect – and not only for the Brandenburg Concertos! However, the renewed tendency in our time to hold to (and indeed become mired in) the otherwise so successfully “rediscovered” and now mainstream “authentic” approach to early music can become a pitfall, as many perceptive observers are coming to realize. In my opinion, it is always an impoverishment to become overly comfortable with new “achievements”, for such achievements can never offer absolute security. “Everything flows”, in the words of the Greek philosopher Heraclites: this certainly pertains in the present circumstances! And for music also, it’s essential to keep the flow going.
